On Wednesday, Senator Althoff, Rep. Karen May and members of the legislature's Green Caucus hosted "Volt Day" at the Illinois Capitol to help draw support for the greater use of electric cars and other environmentally-friendly initiatives.

New models of the Chevrolet Volt were on hand for the public to test drive. The Volt, which can go up to 50 miles on electric power alone, is the first major electric vehicle to be widely available to the American public.

"My hope is that the Volt will be the first of many electric vehicles to fill our roadways in order to help consumers save on the high price of gas, help the environment by reducing toxic emissions and help wean Illinois and the nation away from foreign sources of energy," Althoff says.
