SPRINGFIELD, IL – As the General Assembly enters the final stretch of its spring legislative session, State Sen. Pamela Althoff (R-McHenry) says lawmakers are working to address a $10 billion budget deficit before the scheduled May 31 adjournment.

Budget negotiations between state leaders took a dramatic turn this week, when Gov. Pat Quinn proposed an alternative “doomsday budget” containing $7 billion in cuts to education, health care and veterans’ services, along with $3 billion in tax hikes. The proposal included laying off more than 9,000 teachers and 1,000 state police officers, eliminating health care coverage for hundreds of thousands of children and closing down four state veterans’ homes.
