Springfield, IL- In tribute to one of the United States’ finest military service groups, Illinois Route 173 will be renamed the 173rd Airborne Brigade Highway. The Senate unanimously voted to approve the move under House Joint Resolution 107, a resolution sponsored by Senator Pamela Althoff (R-Crystal Lake) and Senator Michael Bond (D-Grayslake).

Known as the Sky Soldiers, the 173rd Airborne Brigade first went in to service in 1917. The brigade has served in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq. The unit is the only one to perform combat parachute assaults into enemy territory in both Vietnam and Iraq.
